My thoughts on Torchwood: Children of Earth

*contains spoilers for the whole series*

Now that Torchwood has finished airing on BBCAmerica, I thought I would put my thoughts down and see if I can get some coherent thoughts out of them.

First of all, could that have been any more depressing?? I honestly felt depressed after watching episodes 3-5. And that is not what I signed up for AT ALL. It is not how it was advertised and it is not how the rest of the series is. Yes, it is a drama, so you expect bad things to happen, but if it had been advertised as it was, I would have probably chosen not to watch it. If I wanted to watch a show that talked about horrible humanity was and how humans are the greatest monsters of all, I would turn on my nightly news, thank you very much.

Second, why do TV shows always feel the need to kill everyone? Less than 4 episodes ago, we lost 2/5 of our main cast members. Now we have lost another. Or two, if you think of Jack leaving Earth as a permanent thing. Which leaves us with... Gwen? Personally, I never found her character to be that appealing. And than leads us to....

Number three. Why did Gwen always have to be weeping over Jack?! I thought they did great things with her character in COE. There may have been times I actually liked her. But at they end they fell right back to her asking Jack to stay for her, with her husband standing right behind her. It has echos of 'Something Borrowed' where she was basically confessing her love to Jack on her wedding day. This may just be the feminist in me talking, but why can we not have a kick ass female lead who doesn't turn into a weepy emotion wreck just because a man happens to be there?

Plot holes. Big gaping plot holes. Now, as a fan of sci-fi I can handle plot holes. I'm very good at just filling them in my mind and moving on, but there were some pretty big plot holes in COE. I'm sure if your reading this you have seen the episodes, so I'm not going to list them out, but they were abundant throughout.

Related to plot holes, were the plot devices that were used. Such as 'Hey look someone stole the SUV so we have no transportation!' I saw that and was like... really? They have all sorts of alien technology in the SUV but a group of kids is able to steal it? Umm.. ok. I'm pretty sure the writers could have come up with something a little better than that.

Sixth, why was I more emotionally invested in the new characters brought in than the members of Torchwood? I understand the need to bring in more characters, but ultimately I was watching Torchwood, so I kinda expected to see the characters from Torchwood on my screen.

Overall, I have mixed thoughts on COE. As a addition to the Torchwood series, I think it failed horribly. I feel that there was little or no character development and that the actions taken by the team do not fit to what we have expected from them previously. As a standalone mini-series, I think that it could have been a great piece of television, although not one I probably would have chosen to watch. I felt that the story that was told was about the government and their reaction to what was happening. The Torchwood team was thrown is almost as an afterthought.

We lost the things that really drew me to Torchwood in the first place, which was the quirky humor, the bad sci-fi, and the oh so human relationships among all the aliens. And while this new series may have brought in the ratings that the BBC wanted, I felt that it alienated the fans who have watched and supported the series from the beginning. And I personally think that the people who have only watched Children of Earth will be confused if they try to watch the earlier seasons. It will be a completely different show to them, just with the same characters.

Finally, I view COE as the finale of the series. Although they claim that there is going to be a series 4, I do not see how that is possible. You have no characters, no headquarters, and (so it seems) have lost a large fan base with the death of Ianto. Personally, I will be weary of watching anything Torchwood again because I felt so mislead with this series. What I was promised was not what I got.

I'm avoiding finishing my concept paper on human rights, Turkey, religion and the EU. But I'm sitting in our dining area on campus, because I just finished my lunch. And I swear the guy sitting at the table next to me is continuously tapping the rhythm from the Master. It is making me giggle so hard, but I'm trying to not too, so I'm sure I look rather weird. But it is very amusing. :D

That is all. Back to talking about Europe and their relations with Turkey. So much fun.

SEVEN PASSAGES: The Stories of Gay Christians

As most of you probably know, one of my true passions in life is theatre. I spend many hours of my life working on different productions and sitting in theatre classes learning how to be better at what I do. I've always been proud of the shows that I've participated with, but, I've never been apart of a show that has been as thought provoking, and hopefully life changing, as this one.

Seven Passages: The Stories of Gay Christians is a compilation of more then 100 interviews with homosexual Christians. The play brings together the Scriptures (and the Scriptural traditions) and the personal testimonials of gay people in such a way that fosters dialogue without ostracizing or browbeating anyone. It does not shy away from the grave injustices done by many churches to countless homosexual persons, but also does not paint the church as a villain to be destroyed. The hope is to be able to break through the polarized hotbed extremes of these issues and bring to light some nuances, new points of discussion and, in doing so, encourage a renewed sense of empathy for all involved.

It was originally written and produced by a local theatre here in Grand Rapids, where I attend school. They interviewed over 100 local Christians about their personal experiences with coming out to their parents and the reactions of their Churches and the Church community to their sexual preference.

I had previously heard many things about this show, but did not have a chance to see the original production, becuase I was in London at the time. So when I heard that my friend Whitney was directing a production as her senior project I was thrilled. My university is located in what is called the 'Bible belt of Michigan,' meaning it is a rather conservative, Christian area. Now, I personally do not have anything against people with a more conservative viewpoint. Just because it is different than mine, does not mean that it is wrong. I do have trouble listening to many of the things that I hear about homosexuality, though. So I hope that by bringing this show to them, we can help facilitate discussion among the different group, and help end the alienation that many people feel from the Church.

I also found that this production touched very close to my home life. As a heterosexual woman I will not have to deal with the discrimination that comes just becuase of my sexuality. It is accepted and considered 'normal.' I have an uncle though, who is gay. I just recently found this out within the past year. It does not change how I view him in the least, but it made me reflect on the way that my (rather conservative and religious) family acts around him. It is something that is just not discussed, probably why it took me 20 years to figure this fact out. When he comes back to Michigan to visit it is always by himself, even though I know he is in a relationship, and has been for sometime. And truthfully, I'm not even sure if he has come out to my grandparents yet. My family's approach or 'ignore it and hope it goes away' is not how I think people should deal with the issue of homosexuality, or differences in general.

So my hope for this production (other than the typical hoping nothing goes horribly wrong during the run :D ) is that people come see the production and leave with a better understanding of what people in their communities are going through. And with this better understanding are more able to communicate and help those who are different than them.

Step One

I'm putting this behind a cut in case and of my f-list hasn't seen the new Heroes yet and doesn't want to be spoiled.

First things first: David Anders as a drunken, British, samurai = the hottest thing to be on my computer screen in a long time.

Second: Hiro trying to convince said drunken, British, samurai that he needs to be a hero was amazing. And Hiro putting his glasses back on when he saw that his hero was white was hilarious.

Third: Nathan = Jack. Thats the new plot twist for this season. Pretty soon he'll be running into Kate and telling her they have to go back.

Fourth: Claire's stalker is kinda creepy. But the scene with the the Bennet... erm.. Butler... family at the dinner table was one of the best things ever. It kinda reminded me of my family... XD And HRG's interactions with his boss were great too.

Fifth: Mohinder/Matt/Molly... slightly awkward but cute at the same time! I do wonder what/who she's dreaming of though... this could be interesting.

Sixth: The killing of Hiro's dad and possibly Peter's mom without developing their stories/powers = grrr. I was really hoping we'd get to see their powers this season.

Seventh: David Anders is still the sex. I'm loving his character and I hope the writers do some interesting things with him.

Overall, I loved how they just showed us where the characters are now, leaving how they got there to be explained later on. There were some interesting plots developed as well. I do think, however, they focused a bit too much on Claire/Bennet family. Where's Nikky or Sylar? Hopefully their storylines will be caught up with next week. Great premiere though, got me excited for next week and all this season!

But now its 1AM and I actually have class at 10AM so I should go to sleep! Hope my f-list has a wonderful evening/night/whatever!

I went on a random picture-taking spree yesterday and got some pics of my (many and varied) pets, so I decided to share them with y'all! 28 days till I leave for Rome and I move in to my room in London on Sept. 10!! OMG! Craziness!

Also, I'm thinking of doing voice post, so everyone needs to give me some ideas of what to do.

First my cat, Kitty Girl. She is as old as me, at 19. And still going strong. I got her when I was 2 or 3 from a family friend.

She's an old, grouchy cat.

Oh, the macros....

Second is my momma dog, Jazman. She's three. She's actully my daddy's dog, but whatever. XD

She's always chewing on something... >.<

I'm kinda sad this turned out blurry, she looks adorable in it. :(

Third, my baby dog, who's now bigger than his momma, Willie. He's a year and a half now.

Wow. I wasn't aware that you had access to OKCupid! in prison. And if you're not behind bars, all signs say you're well on your way there in the near future.

So I went to Chicago this weekend fr my cousin's graduation party. And from Detroit to Chicago is a six hour drive, right? Wrong. It took us 9.5 hours because the traffic downtown was horrendous! It was seriously insane. But on the bright side, I finally had a chance to try out some new colorings and textures i had been meaning to! Yey!! There are a few of the same bases with different textures and colorings so let me know which version you like best.
